Three Tips To Remember What You Read

Despite the rise of mobile phones, television as well as Twitter traditional reading is still an essential skill. Whatever it is such as school textbooks magazines, or regular books, there are readers, but less than previously. The reason that a lot of people aren't reading as much is due to the fact that they can't effectively read. It's slow, difficult and they're not able to retain the information they need. For instance, they may need to read a book several times before they are able to remember and comprehend the information they have read.

Why? It's not like schools teach children how to read. Schools do try. I've worked with middle school teachers, and they tell me that a lot of students are just a couple or more years off in their reading skills. It is clear that television, cellphones and the Web are the main factors behind this problem, and it is likely to increase if we do not concentrate on and enhance the instruction for reading.

Some of the blame can be attributed to the latest trends in reading education , such as the use of phonics as well as "whole language," which frequently are popularized by people who don't recognize the necessity of both approaches. A majority of the blame for the poor reading skills can be attributed to parents' poor teaching methods , and in due course the children lack the motivation to learn how to read effectively.

If you don't have reading ability, you're not alone., there is no reason to put off reading till it's time to act. Here is a brief summary of the things I believe are necessary to be able to read quickly and efficiently.

  • Set goals and learn.
  • Skim first.
  • Learn the correct method of reading.
  • Be careful when you highlight or take notes.
  • Imagine your thoughts.
  • Practice as you go along.
  • Maintain your attention span under control and work on improving the time you're spending in your head.
  • Rehearse again soon.

1) Know Your Purpose

Every person should set a goal to read, and think about how that goal is being achieved when reading. The advantage of keeping this in mind is that checking constantly to determine what goals are being achieved assists readers to stay focused on the relevant parts of their text and also to read the text repeatedly. This will also to save time and energy as the relevant information is much more likely to get retained.

The reason for reading will be easy if you're in a position to select what you would like to read. Just ask your self "Why am I reading this?" If it's for entertainment or to keep yourself busy then it's not an issue. But, many different motives could be legitimate such as:

  • to understand a particular segment of people to understand a specific group of people, such as Muslims, Jews, Hindus to understand specific populations like Hindus, Muslims, etc.
  • to state your political views to express your political views to clarify your political beliefs, such as the arguments for why a particular policy of the government should not be opposed.
  • to develop a well-informed strategy or to develop a well-informed plan.
  • to satisfy a requirement of an academic course or other assignment for reading.

Many of us are expected to read in the classroom. Sometimes, the head of the department will give us an instruction manual and say "Here. You must go through this." If the instruction comes from the boss or instructor,, it is essential to ask "What do you want to gain by reading the information?" If you don't have such instructions , however, you should nevertheless make your own interpretation of the information and keep a record of the details.

2) Skim First

Certain reading tasks require nothing more than skimming. The correct way to skim is to put focus on headings such as graphs, images, or tables, and also the most important paragraphs (which usually occur in the middle and at the end to the sentence). Based on the purpose you're reading for take your time and focus on the parts that are essential to the goal of your reading.

Anything that needs to be examined with care should be thoroughly sifted through prior to taking a look. The benefits of skimming prior to studying is the fact that it one.) can increase the amount of memory that your brain has which helps you retain the information when you come back to it a second time.) helps you concentrate your mind, which will help you in determining the most important information is in the document. 3)) gives a general understanding and an impression of the overall structure of documents and aids in helping you recall specific information.

The Internet lets people browse through. The way that content is processed through the Web has led authors to use more Web tools like bulleted lists, lists with numbers and sidebars, graphic text boxes, and sidebars. But the drawback of this is the fact that Web layout makes it more difficult to read in depth. This is because the Web encourages users to read at the form of a quick read and leads to bad habits of reading that hamper deep reading.

3) Get the Mechanics Right

To read with depth, eyes have to move in a controlled way. Skimming can help eyes learn to become uncontrolled. If you must be attentive and retain the main idea of huge chunks of text, the eyes have to snap between fixation points to the next one in the right-to-left-sequence. Additionally, the fixations should not consist of a single word or letter, but instead they must focus on several terms for each fixation. There are reading devices that aid the eyes in fixing correctly but only a handful of schools use these devices. Based on my personal experience with these devices, I can say that they increase the speed of reading significantly however, they come at a cost of less understanding. Readers who aren't experienced and who move between words are less able to comprehend because their brains are occupied with the alphabet and their sequence within each word. That is one reason they cannot remember the words they've have read. There have been many times when I've heard students in college who say, "I read that chapter three times, and I still can't answer your questions." When I pose them with questions which prompt thoughts about the content, they are usually unable to answer me because they don't have the ability to recall the significance of what they have read. When I ask them to do memorization exercises, it's common to find them unable to remember due to their focus on the words in themselves stopped their ability to connect the significance of what they read to their previous knowledge which makes it easier to recall. To be able to remember what you have read, you must to think about the significance of the word.

I'm not arguing against the process of phonics I believe it is essential to learn how to read. But, phonics is just the first step in a correct reading program. At certain times, the reader should be able to identify complete words as units. They can then expand the ability to other groups of words.

The most effective strategies to make sure you have an excellent reading technique I've listed the following tips:

  • Make sure you are in contact with the entire text , which is not skimmed
  • Find multiple words in the fixation of each eye.
  • Try to increase the size of each eyes fixation (on the basis of an 8.5 inches wide Try to achieve three fixes , or eventually two per line). This skill must be learned in time. In the beginning, you will need to master reading with the use of five to six fix lines. Then, you can you should work on fixing the four fix per line. Then, three.
  • The eyes snap in a particular direction between fixed points to the following (horizontal snaps on long lines, and horizontal snaps once the entire column line is seen by only one fixed point).

To master this skill , you need patience and time. If you're not able to perform the task yourself, consider formal education through an educational institution.
